Book review: Wooing the Witch Queen by Stephanie Burgis

Blue cover with fantasy imagery of a castle and a potion bottle. The title text is in white.

I picked up this book because two different friends recommended it to me when I asked for books where the hero has no power compared to the heroine. The hero in this book is a ruler (technically), but he’s also a very damaged victim of abuse and, mostly wants to be left alone to look after the library. He knows about magic and spells from having read books, but has no magic himself.
Queen Saskia is a powerful sorceress and self-made Evil Witch Queen. She has a small family of misfits within her castle and really would prefer it if people left her alone to get on with her magical research.
I raced through this book and thought it was wonderful! I loved the romantic storyline and, while there are court intrigue, there wasn’t too much of it. The characters were brilliant. An enthusiastic five stars from me! I can’t wait for the next book.
