Truth or Dare? by Laura E James
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I had heard about Truth or Dare well before it came out. A few years back, I met Laura who told me that most readers were, apparently, ‘stumped’ as to how to classify the book. Having read it, I can see what they mean.
Truth of Dare is a dark and intricate novel. The main character Kate is troubled and, frankly, messed up. All the characters have complicated pasts. The only one from a conventional background is Josh, and even he has a nut job sister.
The story is complex and well woven. The characters were realistic enough for me to want to keep reading. It’s a read-while-you’re-cooking-dinner- because-you-can’t-put-it-down type book. At times it’s relentlessly bleak. Don’t worry though, you won’t end up crying into your cornflakes by the end. There is a happy ending(I’m trying really hard not to give spoilers here).
If you’re into light hearted and funny, it’s probably going to be a bit dark for you. If you’re a fan of Jodi Picoult, you’ll love it.
Many thanks, Rhoda. You’ve made my day 🙂
