This week’s Inheritance Books are from YA writer Shalini Boland. Hi Shalini, welcome to Inheritance Books.Tell me a bit about yourself.

Before kids, I was a singer songwriter signed to Universal Music. But now I’m a mother of two noisy boys and so writing novels fits in perfectly with my life. A typical day is taking the kids to school, doing an hour or so of online promo (while trying not to get sucked in to the chat) and then sitting down with a coffee to write.

I specialise mainly in teen fiction. I write the kinds of books I love to read – gripping young adult adventures with a sprinkling of romance and a big dose of danger. I’m currently in the middle of writing my post-apocalyptic trilogy, the OUTSIDE SERIES, a romance thriller set in the near future.

I love to spend time outdoors with my family. We live a few minutes from the beach and quite close to the forest. A long walk always makes me feel good, especially if there’s a cup of tea and a piece of cake at the end of it.
Which book have you inherited from the generations above? Why is it special?

When she was a little girl, my mum was given a hardback copy of Walt Disney’s SNOW WHITE. The illustrations are taken from the original 1937 movie artwork. She gave the book to me when I was a child and I adored it. I had hoped I might have a little girl to read it to, but ours is a house of boys. I read it to my sons anyway and they enjoyed it when they were very little. Perhaps they’ll have daughters!

That sounds like a wonderful book. Snow White was the first Disney movie I saw, so it’s always been a bit special to me too.

Which book would you like to leave to future generations? Why? 

I have an awful lot of books I’d like to leave to future generations, but one which is special to me is the illustrated edition of LIFE OF PI by Yann Martell. It’s an amazing adventure with a philosophical edge accompanied by stunning images. I can’t imagine anyone not loving it.
